Pixar’s Biggest Problem

While it’s hard to find many problems with the ever so successful Pixar (and subsequently their films), I believe I’ve found quite a large fault of theirs.  This fault doesn’t come in the normal way you’d expect the fault of a person or a company to come.  No, instead, it comes in almost the opposite way of what normally you’d see.  Their biggest fault is setting the bar too high.

This morning, I watched the new trailer that was released for Space Chimps.  Well I wasn’t expecting Space Chimps to be a film that lived up to anything on Pixar’s résumé, it reminded me of the fact that nothing animated seems to have even come close in recent years.  Sure, we’ll get some interesting attempts like Shrek, Over the Hedge, Ice Age and Happy Feet.*  Unfortunately, for both them and us, none of them even produced an ounce of what has become the norm for a Pixar film.

While I don’t wish Pixar wasn’t around, I just want to see more competition out there for them.  In fact, if they truly had competition imagine the movies they would be able to produce.  Or consider, the movies that would be produced by their competition.  It would be a win/win situation for everyone involved.  Instead, studios look at Pixar’s success and assume they’ll be able to half-assedly recreate it for themselves by putting together some silly voices, silly characters or silly scenes.  In actuality, the silliest thing that comes as a result is the fact they even tried.

So, this is my call out to the animation studios.  My challenge to the artists out there.  Think not of the money you’ll be able to rake in from the overly sugared children, but instead think of creating something that actually competes with some of the better films out there.  Try to create something that creates a long lasting name for itself rather than a quick buck for you.  Please, please, please give us some competition.  After all, it’s in all our best interests.

* Really, the only one that really came to mind for that was Shrek.  The rest I had to look up to see what was recently successful at the box office.  Even Shrek has become burnt out as they tried to overly cash in on a already dry cash cow.

What do you all think?  Am I clearly missing something innovative?  Is there competition out there?
