General Admission – April 11th, 2008

Another weekly feature premiere post. Let me know what you think about the format and content.

Smart PeopleTrailerStaring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church, Ellen Page
After Juno’s release and wide critical acclaim I sure everyone was looking forward to Ellen Page’s next movie, including me. And I think Ellen Page has another winner here, maybe not as great as Juno but still a good movie. Church and Quaid look like they’ll provide quite a bit of humor as well. So if you have only one movie to see this weekend, I’d probably go and check this one out. And if you’re still not sure make sure to check out the trailer.

Chaos Theory - TrailerStaring Ryan Reynolds, Stuart Townsend, Emily Mortimer, Sarah Chalke
Ryan Reynolds plays Frank Allen an obsessively organized efficiency expert who decides to leave his life up to fate. Ryan Reynolds looks funny in this but not his usual raunchy Van Wilder funny, a genuine funny. I haven’t heard anything about the film until now which means many of you probably haven’t either so go hit up the trailer.

Street KingsTrailerStaring Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans, Common, The Game
“We’re the police, we can do whatever the hell we want” I think that sums up the movie pretty well. It’s directed by the same guy that wrote Training Day. This could turn out to be a decent crime thriller with action sprinkled throughout. So if you prefer violence instead of laughter this could be your movie this weekend.

Prom Night - TrailerStaring Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, Dana Davis, Johnathon Schaech
She thought the obsessed killer from her past was gone forever, but he wasn’t, oh no! Yea, the movie looks that cheesy as well. From the trailer I think you should save your money and only rent it if you really want to see it for some reason. Even then you’re probably better off renting Scream.

Young@HeartTrailerDocumentary
A senior citizens chorus travels worldwide performing covers by The Clash, The Ramones, Sonic Youth, Coldplay and many more. This looks like a good light hearted documentary about friendship and rock n roll. I never thought a movie about a bunch of senior citizens singing “I Wanna Be Sedated” by The Ramones would exist, let alone look good. I’ll definitely at least rent this one mostly because I don’t think documentaries are best suited for the big screen.

Dark MatterTrailerStaring Liu Ye, Aidan Quinn, Meryl Streep
The true story of Gang Lu, a young scientific genius whose life soon turns to violence in the University of Iowa shooting after his doctoral dissertation did not receive a prestigious academic award . From the trailer it is unclear of the shooting is included in the film or if it is just the events leading up to it. I’m not sure what to say about the movie, maybe if this story interests you you should research more about the movie to see if it has what you expect and make your own choice.

The Visitor - TrailerStaring Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Jekesai Gurira
A Connecticut economics professor comes back to his apartment in New York City only to find that he has some unexpected tenants. He soon develops a close friendship with his new roommates who help to change his life. From the trailer the movie looks ok, not good, but not bad either. I don’t think you’ll miss much if you don’t see this movie.

What I Plan on Seeing This Weekend

Smart People - The trailer makes the film look warm and funny. Also Ellen Page is pretty big right now so I’m expecting a lot from her. Dennis Quad and Thomas Hadden Church look pretty funny in the film as well. I’m not a big Sarah Jessica Parker fan so I hope she doesn’t drag the film down.

What are you excited about seeing this weekend?

I am most interested in seeing Smart People.
  • I'm sure it will expand, especially as it gets closer to DVD release. Let us know how Smart People was, that one looks very good also.
