Lars and the Real GirlJunoJuno - 7.9/10 – Trailer
“ThunderCats are go!” I’m pretty sure most of you have already seen this movie at least once. For the very few that haven’t this is a comedy/drama about a teenage girl who becomes pregnant and decides to put up the baby for adoption. This film was nominated for “Best Picture” and Ellen Page was nominated for “Best Actress” for her role as Juno. Everything about this movie is great, the writing, the characters, the actors/actresses. Also for you Arrested Development fans, this has Michael Cera and Jason Bateman. Definitely make sure you rent this one, hell I’d suggest even just buying it.

Lars and the Real Girl – 8/10 – Trailer
Ryan Gosling stars as Lars, a shy fellow living in a renovated garage beside his brother’s house in a small town. He finds it very hard to socialize with the females in his life, which causes him to purchase an anatomically correct sex doll online. Unlike most people who would make such a purchase, Lars believes the doll to be his real life girlfriend. The town doctor concludes that Lars is using this delusion to help him work through personal issues and that his friends and family should play along. Infact the whole town plays along and soon, Lars’ doll develops a life of her own. This is a great heart warming movie about how a whole town can come together to help one of their own. I’d definitely recommend renting this one this week.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead – 7.8/10 – Trailer
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke play two brothers who are desperate need of money and decide to rob a jewelery store. Oh yea, the jewelery store is owned by their parents. It was supposed to be a victimless crime, toyguns and all. But as usual, not everything goes according to plan. This has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and looks like it would be a good alternative to this weeks comedies and dramas. If suspense or thriller is more to your liking than you should pick this one up.

Aliens vs Predator: Requiem – 5.8/10 – Trailer
As if putting us through the first AVP wasn’t bad enough, they made a sequel. I learned my lesson after the first one and made sure to steer clear of this one and I suggest most of you to do the same. For those who can’t be reasoned with, this movie is about a war between the alien and predator races that takes place in a small town on Earth. Humans are thus caught in the middle and predictably most of them will die. As if this movie wasn’t causing enough damage to the two series, they created a hybrid Alien/Predator just for this movie.

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale – 3.5/10 – Trailer
Infamous director Uwe Boll brings us another horrible video game based movie. Jason Stathom’s character Farmer sets off on a journey to rescue his wife and help avenge his victimized countrymen. There could be a lot of medieval action, but it’s probably not worth it. In the film’s opening week it failed to enter the top ten and has a 2% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unless you really love Uwe Boll, Jason Stathom or the Dungeon Siege video game, don’t even bother with this movie.

The Final Season – 5/10 – Trailer
From wikipedia, “The true story of Kent Stock (Sean Astin), who in the early 90s, takes the job of a lifetime as head coach of the Norway High School baseball team, a school which had won 19 State titles and equated baseball with life.” Unless you’re familiar with the story or really enjoy baseball movies, this is a pass.

My Rentals:

Juno - Quick witty humor with great characters and a hamburger phone, what more could you ask for?

Lars and the Real Girl - Heart warming drama with the vast amount of comedy sprinkled on top. Ryan Gosling sure has come a long way from Breaker High.

What do you plan on renting/buying this week?

  • just saw Lars and the Real Girl, Gosling did a great job playing out his character's psychological transition from totally dysfunctional to somewhat functional; it was nice of them to leave out the predictable small-town drama as well
  • The reason i enjoyed AVP so much i think is the story line, it shows how the predators just created the aliens for hunting practice. I like the idea of the predators being superior to the aliens.
  • Trevor
predator was great, alien was great. the AVP video game was great. the movie, not so much
  • I have Juno and Alien vs Predator 2 both coming tomorrow on Netflix. Before the AVP bashing starts, i'm a huge predator fan and i don't care what anyone says, the movies are good - :P

    Nice post Trevor!
  • I'm picking up Lars and the Real Girl. I've been meaning to see this since I watched the trailer around the Oscars and I still haven't.
