WBO: Forbidden Kingdom Karate Chops Sarah Marshall
Well it’s Monday and it’s time for another edition of Weekend Box Office. We’re going to recap how well films did this weekend and hopefully make sense of all these numbers.
This weekend was all about Forbidden Kingdom* which is the first time Jet Li and Jackie Chan have met on film and apparently enough to beat up on what could have been a weekend dominated by Judd Apatow and Jason Segel. Kingdom took in $20,870,000 this weekend while playing in about 3,151 theaters. (Trailer)
Following closely to Kingdom was the Judd Apatow/Jason Segel comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall*. While most films wouldn’t mind being in the number two spot, this film was expected to be Apatow’s next big smash hit and gross something close to Knocked Up and Superbad. It raked in about $17,348,000 while playing in 2,798 theaters. Knocked Up and Superbad opened with $30,690,990 and $33,052,411 respectively as a comparison. With an 86% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it was very surprising that this film did not meet or exceed the opening numbers set by those two. (Trailer)
Down in the third spot was last weekends numero uno, Prom Night. This film was able to pick up another $9,100,000 to bring it up to a total of $32,564,000. (Trailer)
Another new release was able to slide into the fourth spot for the weekend. 88 Minutes*, which stars Al Pacino, was able to nab $6,800,000 in 2,168 theaters despite being unliked overall by critics. (Trailer)
