CloverfieldCloverfield - 7.4/10 - Trailer
This is a “Godzilla” movie for American audiences. Footage is obtained by the US Department of Defense in site US-447, formerly known as Central Park, from a digital hand-held camera which pertains to the case codenamed “Cloverfield”. The film starts out at a going-away party in New York City but soon escalates into an intense “Godzilla” type movie. One has to remember that the film is presented as an exact copy of the footage that is “found” on the video camera and does not include extra scenes to help explain what is happening in the film, that is up to the audience. I really enjoyed this use of story telling and I thought it really helped make the footage seem more realistic. Watching this in the theater was a very intense experience but I don’t know how well it will translate onto our small television sets. If you like thriller and/or monster movies like the old Godzillas than this should be for you, if you just want to see what the monster looks like then Google is your best friend.

Charlie Wilson's WarCharlie Wilson’s War - 6.8/10 - Trailer
A biographical comedy/drama film based on the true story of how Congressman Charlie Wilson conspired with the CIA to help resistance fighters in Afghanistan fend of the Soviet Union. This film was up for, but did not win, 5 Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also up for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award but did not win. Even though this film is currently receiving a 6.8/10 on IHM, the film has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If you like Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, or Julia Roberts than this could be your rental for the week.

The Savages - 8/10 - Trailer
Philip Seymour Hoffman stars in another release this week alongside Laura Linney. Hoffman and Linney play siblings who reconnect after drifting apart for many years when their father’s health starts to decline and they must take care of him even after not speaking to him for twenty years. This film is doing very well with the critics and is on many top ten lists for 2007. Laura Linney was also up for the Oscar for Best Actress. This look like a very real family drama that involves many human experiences that most of us will or have faced in our lifetime.

Resurrecting the Champ - 6/10 - Trailer
Josh Hartnett plays a sports writer who stumbles across a homeless man (Samuel L. Jackson) who claims he is a former boxing legend. While writing and learning about the Champ’s life the reporter starts to reexamine his own life and relationships with his family. This seems to play out more like a drama and not a sport’s movie. If the trailer interests you than try the movie out and leave a comment letting us know what you thought of the movie.

One Missed Call - 5/10 - Trailer
Another Japanese horror movie is remade for us lucky viewers, how original. The plot is pretty simple, one day you receive a phone call from the future that includes what it will sound like when you die. When one unlucky college student receives her own call, she decides to investigate the prior murders to figure out how she can prevent her own death. If you’re a fan of horror than this might be your rental but if you’re a real horror fan than you might want to hunt down the Japanese original.

My Rentals:

Cloverfield - I saw this in the theater and I really enjoyed it. It was very intense and it had a very interesting story telling technique. I am definitely looking forward to all the extras and special features on the DVD.

How are you going to fulfill your rental addiction this week?
