Foreplay and the City: A Sex and the City Prelude

In anticipation of the new film I decided to give everyone who hasn’t seen Sex and the City or have forgotten what happened, a recap of the series before we watch the film.  Even though this should give you enough information about the series if you have never watched it, I would highly suggest renting some of the seasons to watch before you go catch the film.   Make sure you like the characters first before you fall for the hype.

By now we should all know who the main character is, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), but for those who don’t, here’s a little recap. Each episode was narrated by her and revolved around her weekly newspaper column “Sex and the City”.  She has had multiple long term relationships but constantly finds herself returning to Mr. Big and finally ends up with him in the season finale.  Big’s name is never mentioned until the series finale where it was revealed to be John.

Also, you may not know the other characters of the series.  First, we have Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) who could be considered the “sex” of Sex & the City.  She will sleep around with anyone and everyone without fear of emotional attachment.  Although, she does end up having a long term relationship with Jerry Jared, an aspiring actor who she later has his name changed to Smith Jared.  Their relationship last the entire final season and presumably has continued to last up to the film.

Then we have Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) the most conservative of the group.  She was always the most likely to have a big upscale fancy wedding and live happily ever after.  She did find a husband and everything turned out exactly as she imagined except for the happily ever after.  Soon she found Harry to whom which she married and adopted a child together.  Charlotte also converted to Judaism for Harry.

Finally we have Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), the single lawyer and soon single mom who becomes pregnant with her on and off again boyfriend Steve Brady in the middle of the series.  By the final season of the series she and Steve finally fall deeply in love and get married.  Their son’s name is Brady Hobbes, but luckily for him, Miranda keeps her maiden name at the wedding, otherwise he would be called Brady Brady and that’s just messed up.  During the finale, Steve’s mom also move’s in with them after they find out she had a small stroke and has significant memory loss.

The film itself takes place four years after the series ended which is equivalent to the real world time passing.  From the trailers we find that Carrie and Big are still dating and eventually become engaged, Charlotte and Harry are still together raising their adopted daughter, Miranda and Steve are continuing their suburban life and Samantha has moved away to LA with Smith for his acting career.  We also see that Carrie pulls a runaway bride and ditches Big at the altar, for reasons that are unclear.  Miranda finds out that Steve cheated on her, after which she leaves him taking Brady with her.  Charlotte finally becomes pregnant after many years of trying.  And Samantha is still her horny self.

The film is approximately two hours fifteen which makes is just over four episodes long which if you own or have watched any of the seasons on DVD than it’s one disc long.  I really don’t know what to expect from the film, I don’t know how well television series’ translate to film.  Not everyone has seen Sex and the City but I’m pretty sure everyone or at least most people have seen Friends and I don’t think I’d want them to make a Friends movie.  Of course we want more episodes of the show but a movie just wouldn’t be enough.  I think films would make any show more serious than it was on television, it would have to be to justify making a film.  There would need to be some big plot points and twists, there wouldn’t be any of the plots from the less serious episodes where nothing really happened but was a good laugh.  And those laughter episodes are why I usually tune back in and watch reruns, the serious episodes are sometimes too depressing to watch over and over.  So even though the film might turn out well, it might not have that re-watch factor of the series.  Hopefully they won’t be trying to tie everything up at the end of the film and still leave it open, I don’t think we expect everyone to live happily ever after and that’s probably why the series did so well.  But I also hope that they don’t try and set up the film for multiple sequels.

Have you watched the series and are you planning on catching the film this weekend?
