Fool’s Gold - 6.7/10 - Trailer
Matthew McConaughey plays Ben Finnegan, a treasure hunter whose never ending hunt for the treasure of the Queens’ Dowry has caused his marriage to Tess (Kate Hudson) to fall apart. Soon Tess is working on a large yacht, away from Finn, but when Finn finds another big clue to the location of the treasure he tracks down Tess and convinces her and the owners of the yacht to help him search for the treasure. The treasure hunt also causes the two to rekindle their love for each other. I suspect some laughs and good chemistry between the two leads. I don’t see the film being too good but it might be a decent movie for couples.
Be Kind Rewind - 6.1/10 - Trailer
Jack Black and Mos Def play Jerry and Mike who work at a declining video rental store and are soon left in charge of the store while the owner leaves on business. Soon after, the two realize that Jerry has accidentally erased all of the VHS tapes, now they need to figure out how to replace all of the tapes. With a lack of cash they are left with only one option, re-shoot all of the classic films by themselves and starring themselves. Soon these remade films become very popular and the two become minor movie stars. The film looks like a very funny comedy especially for those who have seen all of the movies that are being remade in the film. I’d recommend this one for anyone who wants a decent laugh this weekend.
Chaos Theory - N/A - Trailer
Ryan Reynolds plays Frank Allen an obsessively organized efficiency expert who decides to leave his life up to fate. Ryan Reynolds looks funny in this but not his usual raunchy Van Wilder funny, a genuine funny. When this comedy released in April, I was excited to catch it in the theater but to my disappointment it did not play near me. I’m pretty excited to see how Reynolds pulls off this role and to see how the film turns out.
Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins - 6/10 - Trailer
Martin Lawrence plays a successful talk-show host Dr. RJ Stevens, who decides to go home with his new celebrity girl for his parents 50th wedding anniversary. Once he’s home his family starts to point out how much he’s changed since he’s gone off to the big city and become a celebrity. Soon after RJ will start to look back on his life and try and figure out what went wrong. This could have been a decent family comedy but it seems that it falls flat on its face. With other decent releases this week you might want to skip this film or save it for a rainy day.
Super High Me - 6/10 - Trailer
Comedian Doug Benson decides to take the premise of critically acclaimed Super Size Me and give it his own special twist. This time instead of eating McDonald’s for 30 days, he decides to smoke and consume cannabis for 30 days straight to determine if it has any ill effects and for a laugh. This film did pretty well with critics and will probably do well with the general audience, if they ever decide to pick it up at the video store. Just think of it as Super Size Me with weed and you should be able to convince some friends to watch it with you and have some good laughs.
My Rentals:
Be Kind Rewind - Jack Black and Mos Def making their own version of Ghostbusters? You can count me in.
Chaos Theory - I’ve been a fan of Ryan Reynolds for a while and I really want to see what he can do in this sort of role.
How many films are you bringing home from the video store this week?
