Renters Anonymous - June 30th/July 1st, 2008 - Early Edition
This Week: June 30th/July 1st, 2008
This is a special Canada Day Early Edition. For those who don’t know, July 1st is Canada Day, thus most stores will be closed and for this reason, those living in Canada will be getting their DVD fix a day early (June 30th). For everyone else in North America, the DVD will be released on Tuesday (July 1st) as regular.
Vantage Point - 6.9/10 - Trailer
This film is actually a story that takes place over 23 minutes about the assassination attempt on the President of the United States, but what’s interesting is that the story is retold through many different peoples “vantage point”s and helps unravel the mystery of what actually happened. The retelling of the story helps explain many different questions that arise and poses many more. This story telling technique was pretty interesting to see play out but at some points you just wanted them to stop rewinding and get on with it. The film itself is a pretty decent thriller with some twists and turns and has some big names behind it, such as Dennis Quaid, Forest Whitaker, William Hurt and Matthew Fox (of Lost fame). If you’re looking for something different from you thrillers than you should check this out, it may not be the greatest film, but it’s decent enough to garner a rent.
Drillbit Taylor - 6/10 - Trailer
Owen Wilson is Bob “Drillbit” Taylor, a homeless beggar who poses as a martial arts master, mercenary and bodyguard for hire. A couple of young nerdy boys hire Drillbit to be their personal bodyguards to protect them from their school bullies. Drillbit also decides to teach the boys how to man up, protect themselves and boost their confidence. Seth Rogan helped pen the screenplay for this comedy, so that might make this film worthy of viewing. Owen Wilson looks pretty decent in the film, it’s just the teenage actors that serve as our other leads that don’t look as great as a McLovin or friends. For a decent comedy you might want to try this one out, but I am not guaranteeing hilarity.
In Bruges - 7.8/10 - Trailer
This is a dark comedy starring Colin Ferrel and Brendan Gleeson as two hitmen who are told to stay stay in Bruges, Belgium after a recently botched hit and await further instructions from their employer. The two start to take in their scenery and start to have differing views on life and death while they await the call from their boss. From the previews this looks like a pretty decent film and comedy but it’s a dark comedy so it might not be for everyone. An interesting piece of trivia, this film was the opening night film of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
My Rentals:
Drillbit Taylor -I don’t know why but Owen Wilson looks pretty funny in this film so I’ll be checking it out to see if it’s true.
In Bruges - After reading up on the film I now remember seeing some behind the scenes stuff and interviews for the film a while back, which made me want to see the film. And with positive reviews from friends, I’ll be checking this one out.
What do you plan on grabbing this week?
PS Happy Canada Day (July 1st) and Happy Independance Day (July 4th). Hope everyone has one has a good long weeekend.
