General Admission – July 11th, 2008
Opening this week: July 11th, 2008
Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Trailer – Starring Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones
Guillermo del Toro, of Pan’s Labyrinth fame, is directing this sequel to the 2004 Hellboy film. Earth is threatened when the truce between humanity and the invisible realm of fantasy is broken. A leader from the fantasy realm goes against his bloodline and summons an army of creatures to destroy humanity. Now Hellboy and his gang must cross between realms and battle creatures from the brilliant mind of Guillermo del Toro. I’ve heard talks on the internet which like to describe the creatures in the film as “leftovers” from Pan’s Labyrinth, but I like to think of them as a “second helping”. I think this series is a perfect fit for the director and that his creatures are visually amazing. If you’re a comic book fan or if you love Guillermo’s vision than you’ll probably want to check this film out. The film is receiving pretty good reviews where many compliment Del Toro’s visuals.
Journey to the Center of the Earth – Trailer – Starring Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson
This is a film adaption of the novel of the same name, where a volcanologist and his nephew encounter a few friends on a trip to Iceland to study a volcano. During their exploration of the volcano, the group fall down a large chasm and find themselves in a new world at the center of the earth. There’s oceans, dinosaurs, people and many other unexplainable things. To throw a wrench in the gears, the group find out that the temperature is starting to rise while they are in the center of the earth and they must find they’re way back to the surface before disaster strikes. The main marketing ploy for this film is that it can be viewed in 3D (where available). And for those not up on current 3D tech, you don’t have to wear those stupid red/blue glasses anymore, now they are clear (but still as dorky). This is a film (ride?) for the youngsters out there and for those oldies that remember the 1864 book and 1959 film.
Meet Dave - Trailer – Starring Eddie Murphy, Gabrielle Union, Elizabeth Banks
Another film were Eddie Murphy gets to delight us by playing multiple roles. This time a man shaped vessel lands in New York City carrying a hundred miniature aliens that resemble human form. The ship is modeled after the captain, both of which are played by Eddie Murphy. The crew piloting the ship (Dave) are trying to find a way to save their own planet, but they soon get sidetracked when Dave falls in love. The humor in the film will most be a jab at everyday life as a human on planet earth and according to the reviews, there isn’t much of it (humor that is). I thought this multiple role gag died years ago but I guess someone still thought it was funny enough to produce. I don’t see this film pleasing audiences and should only be watched as a rental.
My Ticket Purchases:
Hellboy II: The Golden Army – I enjoyed the first Hellboy and I absolutely loved Pan’s Labyrinth. So a chance to have essentially more of both is great.
Also, if you want to see what I’m excited about buying tickets for in the near future, feel free to check out my Tickets to Purchase list over at IHM. The list should be showing films that will be releasing in the next month or has already released and I’ll update as often as possible.
What do you plan on checking out this week? And do you have your Dark Knight tickets yet?
Coming up next week:
The Dark Knight…and some other movies (Mamma Mia!, Space Chimps)
