Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - 6.6/10 - Trailer
This film is a direct continuation of the first film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. At the end of the first film Harold discovers that the girl of his dreams has left for Amsterdam and he decides to go after her. In this film the two are mistaken for terrorists on their way to Amsterdam and imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay from which they obviously escape. I watched the first film one night when I was bored, not expecting much, and it turned out to be a pretty decent comedy. If you enjoyed the first film than you’ll probably enjoy this one. If you haven’t seen the first one, don’t worry I don’t think you’ll be lost in the sequel.
Never Back Down - 4/10 - Trailer
Jake is the new kid at school so he get’s to be picked on by the local kids who lure him into an underground fighting club. Jake decides to take up mixed martial arts so that he will be able to defend himself and to show he’s more than just the new kid. The kids that are fighting in this film are by no means action stars so I wouldn’t expect anything too exciting from this film. I guess this film could be considered this generations Karate Kid so unless you’re around the age of the people in the film I’d shy away from this one.
Doomsday - 6/10 - Trailer (limited)
A deadly virus spreads throughout the British isles, infecting pretty much everyone and killing hundreds of thousands. To prevent any further spread of the virus, authorities decide to quarantine the infected area and leave everyone for dead. Now almost three decades later, the virus is back and there are rumors of survivors in the original quarantine area. In order to find a cure, an elite group of specialists must enter the quarantine area and figure out how those still living have survived. But after being shut out from society the survivors have given up on the world, creating their own rules and society and now feel that they want to prevent the specialists from finding the cure. There should be some interesting apocalyptic action but probably not a lot of plot development. If you found the trailer interesting then you might want to pick up this rental.
WarGames: The Dead Code
After 25 years we finally have a sequel to the great Matthew Broderick film WarGames. This time a young computer wiz stumbles upon a government super-computer named RIPLEY and engages it in a terrorist-attack simulation game. Unfortunately the computer is actually used to help seek out potential terrorists and now Homeland Security is out to apprehend the computer wiz. This isn’t much of a sequal but more of an updated direct-to-dvd version of the original film. If you’ve seen the original then sure pick this up and see how it compares but if you haven’t I’d just pick up the original which is also re-releasing this week as 25th Anniversary Edition.
My Rentals:
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - I’ve been waiting for this one to come out on dvd
War Games: The Dead Code - The original movie was awesome, and I’ve seen it many times so I’m interested to see how this one compares.
So is anyone up for some Global Thermonuclear War or a bottomless party?
Coming up next week:
Nim’s Island, The Counterfeiters, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder
