‘Step Brothers’ or “I wasn’t expecting the use of a prosthetic scrotum in the first twenty minutes of this film” (Review)

If you’ve seen the trailers for the Will Farrell and John C. Riley comedy ‘Step Brothers’ and said to yourself ‘I think I might like that,’ then you’ll be very pleased with this movie. It delivers on the initial promise of the trailer and then some. As with most Will Ferrell movies, this is not a film to be too concerned with plot and direction. This movie is silly and some might even call it stupid. These people who think and feel this way about ‘Step Brothers’ should clearly avoid it. ‘Step Brothers’ is all those things and more, which is why this movie works as the comedy it is.

This is not a highbrow piece of cinema. The concept alone should be a prime indicator of what type of movie going experience it will be. Two men whose parents have recently married now realize they have become step-brothers. The catch is… both men are forty-year-olds who should have moved out of their parent’s house ages ago, and are developmentally stunted man-boys who barely understand how to function in society. Who else most perfectly displays on-screen developmentally stunted guys than Will Ferrell and John C. Riley, right?

‘Step Brother’ goes for the R rating it justly receives and makes the best use of that. This is such a treat because this could have easily been a movie to cater to a younger audience by cutting down on the raunchier content. This isn’t the edgiest film to come out this year but there are moments that are funny because of how unexpected they are. Will Ferrell and John C. Riley play up the most ridiculous scenarios and just build upon the illogical and it works scene after scene.

I was pleased to walk out of this movie knowing that I got exactly what I was expecting from this film. It wasn’t a masterpiece, but it most definitely wasn’t a let-down. There wasn’t a moment during this movie when I wasn’t laughing or thoroughly amused with what I was witnessing on screen. ‘Step Brothers’ instills the viewer that the pairing of Will Ferrell and John C. Riley will for now only result in comedic gold.

I remember the scene when Will Ferrell scrub his balls on his half brother's drum set....that's funny....or when they sleepwalking and start to messing up....ha ha ha!!

i also just saw this film and i thought it was pretty funny but it was missing some of the heart that would have made it great. it didn't feel for the characters, i just wanted them to do some more funny stuff.
