Trailer: The Soloist Tears at Your Heartstrings

Robert Downey Jr. sure is having one hell of a comeback.  I mean, if Iron Man, Tropic Thunder and Charlie Bartlett weren’t proof, he’s got a new film coming in November called The Soloist.  The film, in a somewhat similar (but hopefully better executed) plot as Resurrecting the Champ, stars Downey Jr. as LA Times journalist Steve Lopez, who finds a violin prodigy and schizophrenic homeless man Nathaniel Ayers (played by Jamie Foxx).  As it appears in the trailer below, the film focuses mostly on the relationship between Ayers and Lopez and Lopez’s attempts at understanding Ayers and his condition.

Alex Billington over at First Showing is calling it “this year’s Pursuit of Happyness“.  I don’t know if I agree, remember this is based on both of us seeing only the trailer, but I think the with the combination of Downey Jr. and Foxx the mainstream public will eat this up.  Not to mention what appears to be a very emotional and tear enducing storyline.  Of course when I say that I mean for the ladies.  Us guys, we grunt instead of crying.

Check out the trailer below and let me know if you think this will pan out to something Oscar worthy.

The Soloist is directed by Joe Wright who will again be applying his beautiful visual sylings as he has done before for films like Atonement and Pride & Prejudice.  The film is actually based on the true story of and newspaper articles published by real life Steve Lopez.  Susannah Grant (Catch and Release, Erin Brockovich, Charlotte’s Web) worked wrote the screenplay from those articles and stories.  The Soloist arrives in theaters on November 21st.
