Film Appetizers – September 25th, 2008
Some films to wet your appetite for the new releases this week.
Eagle Eye – We got a nice little thriller in this one, basically Shia LaBeouf’s character is framed as a terrorist by some large group that wants to force him into running some “errands” for them.
- The Game
Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) is an investment banker that receives a mysterious gift one day that forces him to participate in a game, (one that he really doesn’t want to play). When the game crosses over into his real life, Nicholas must play the game, weither he likes it or not, in order to find out how/when the game ends. In this film, we have a man being forced to play a game by an unknown company with unknown intentions. - Die Hard with a Vengeance
In order to prevent a massive explosion at school, John McClane (Bruce Willis) and Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson) must play an elaborate game of Simon Says. So this one we got a couple of guys running around the city with an unknown man calling the shots. - The Matrix
The scene where Neo is in the office and receives a phonecall from Morpheous, Neo runs around the building avoiding the agents by following the directions given to him by Morpheous. This is very similar to what we see in the trailer of Eagle Eye, with Shia LaBeouf following the directions of the voice on the phone. Although the rest of the film probably has very little to do with each other, they both sort of have that Big Brother feel.
Miracle at St. Anna – this is sort of a war movie with a little bit of mystery thrown in. It follows four black soldiers of the all-black 92nd Infantry Division who get trapped near a small Tuscan village during WWII.
- Three Kings
We got a group of three soldiers who are trying to steal Kuwaiti gold bullion from Iraqi bunkers near the end of the Gulf War. We got some good action in it and some nice thriller thrown into the mix. I wouldn’t call it a mystery because we know what’s going on but you don’t really know how well it will turn out. - Saving Private Ryan
One of the most powerful war movies that I have ever seen. You got a little bit of mystery thrown in, sort of. Basically a family lost all of their sons during WWII except for one, so the army decides to send a small group of soldiers to extract Private Ryan in order to put out a nice press piece. Even though we know what the main plot is, we just don’t know how well it will be pulled off and who will live and who will die. - Apocalypse Now (153min) / Apocalypse Now Redux (202min)
One of the greatest war films of all time (in my opinion anyway). During the Vietnam war Col. Kurtz mysteriously goes AWOL and may have gone insane. In order to bring Kurtz back, they send in Captain Willard to find him and bring him back. We got war and mystery in this one, we have to find out what the heck went on and what caused Kurtz to leave.
Any other films you guys want to thrown into the list?
