Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Shooting Some Scenes in IMAX

We all need to get out our pens and papers and get writing letters to Christopher Nolan to thank him for what he did.  No, we’re not talking about The Dark Knight (but you can still thank him for that great piece of work anyway).  I’m talking about filming certain Dark Knight scenes with IMAX cameras.  Because of his work pushing that envelope for mainstream film, we’re now going to see other filmmakers follow his lead.  Specifically Michael Bay for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Bay announced today that he would be filming three scenes with the 70mm IMAX film (compared to the standard 35MM film).  The benefit to that (beyond super big explosions) is the clarity that is gained from shooting on this type of film.  The depth and quality to IMAX is amazing and to have giant robots in that format is even better.  Personally this makes me even more excited to see the film.  And I hope it causes even more directors to look this way when creating their work.

What are you feelings on the IMAX format entering mainstream films?  Did you notice a difference in The Dark Knight?
