Star Trek: Countdown
So Star Trek officially launches tomorrow (with some advance screenings today) so I thought I’d give you guys some back story via the Star Trek: Countdown comic book prequel. Many of you are probably like “what
prequel?”, well a little while ago they launched a 4-issue mini series that followed the back story of the film’s baddie, Nero. The prequel takes place just after the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series and features: Picard, Data, LaForge, Worf and of course, Spock. So what happens that causes Nero to go all evil and travel back in time to the days of Kirk? Well a star is about to supernova and cause all sorts of havoc to the universe, especially for the Romulans (Nero is one). Spock informs the Romulans that if they get help from the Vulcans (a big no-no) then they will be able to prevent the supernova and save the Romulans. Of course, this is not an option for the Romulans and they decide that since their scientists haven’t found any evidence of the impending supernova, then the friendly half-Vulcan must be mistaken.
So what happens next? Well, Spock isn’t going to sit on his ass and do nothing. He rounds up a few Federation friends and gathers the necessary materials to cause the star to turn into a black hole and save many many lives. But it’s a little too late, the star goes supernova and consumes Nero’s home planet, killing all that he has loved. Oh, yea, Nero is on a ship far away and is safe, but now angry. He and his crew decide to take it upon themselves to seek revenge on those who did not prevent this from happening. As per Romulan custom, they paint their grief on their skin, but they take it one step further and tattoo it instead. Hence all the fancy tribal artwork on their faces. So Spock couldn’t prevent the supernova, but he ends up flying his some red matter into it that causes it to turn into a black hole, which apparently allows Spock, Nero and his crew to travel back in time and give a nice little “What’s up?” to Kirk and the gang.
The time travel brings up some continuity issues, such as Spock being visited by Nero when he is young and again when he is old. Does this version of time travel cause alternate realities where the Spock in the comic book and the one in the film are on two different time streams? Or did Spock know all along and knew that he couldn’t do anything to stop it. I guess we’ll all have to watch the film to find out.
Hope this gives you guys who didn’t read the comic (and maybe those who did) some insight into the events that lead up to the Star Trek film. You can pick up the comics separately or as one nice trade paperback
Live long and prosper.
