When a military experiment goes wrong, two prehistoric sea creatures are unwittingly unleashed upon the Earth’s oceans. They’ve been encased in ice for millions of years, and as you can imagine, they’re ready to kick ass and take names. But with a lack of hands and/or pens that work under water they have to resort to simply taking their rage out on whales, oil rigs, jumbo jets and bridges. Just the sort of thing you’d expect gargantuan sea predators to do. When a group of rogue scientists discover the truth behind the mysterious attacks, they hatch a plan along with the United States military to take out the massive beasts.

Sound bad, right? Well, it is. But hard as I tried, I couldn’t quite hate this movie. Don’t get me wrong, it was horrible. The acting was atrocious. Even with the suspension of reality, the plot was ridiculously laid out. And seriously, I could have recreated the special effects in my bathtub if I wanted to. I already own the plastic shark for God’s sake. And don’t ask me how I know this, but it’s not that hard to get your hands on a small live octopus.

So give Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus a chance. It is truly a film that’s so bad you can’t help but enjoy yourself a little bit when you’re watching it. Being jacked up on Dr. Pepper and Skittles doesn’t hurt either, just for the record. And let’s face the facts here; we all have a sacred duty to make sure Lorenzo Lamas’s career thrives in some fashion. My only true complaint is that they didn’t just have Deborah Gibson subdue the sea-beasts with a stirring rendition of “Lost in Your Eyes.” Maybe in the sequel.

Review: The Crazies (2010)
7 / 10 stars

Genre: Horror, Thriller
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson
Rating: R

Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days. There is a plethora of films in which the walking dead return to munch on the living, and it’s a rare occasion when a horror flick of this type stands out from the rest. However, The Crazies, a remake of a 1973 film of the same name, manages to do just that.

The citizens of a small town in Iowa begin to go insane or die as they are affected by a toxin found in the water supply. A plane transporting the toxin – a bio-weapon created by the government – crashes in a local river, quickly turning citizens into violent psychopaths. David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife Judy (Radha Mitchell) band together with other unaffected townsfolk and attempt to escape the military-controlled quarantine locking down the area while avoiding infected citizens.

This film is different from most zombie films in that the people infected by the “zombie” virus don’t turn into reanimated undead corpses that hunger for human flesh. Instead, those infected either die or go insane, turning into violent “crazies” bent on murdering those who have not contracted the virus.

The film presents an action-packed, intense thrill that will have you jumping almost nonstop. There are plenty of gruesome scenes, but The Crazies does not rely solely on its gore effects as so many modern horror films do. There is a complimentary mix of scenes that make you jump and scenes that contain brutality, effectively keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the majority of the film.

Though a horror film, The Crazies – both the 1973 original and the remake – packs a pretty hefty political message. Right from the beginning, the government is portrayed as careless and selfish. Without going into specifics that would require plot spoilers to fully explain, suffice it to say that the resolution of the film will probably leave you feeling uneasy. The film has a lot to say about government responsibility — or lack thereof.

Having seen both the 1973 film and the remake, I must say I like the resolution of the original version better. Though the remake is much more visually appealing and intense, it has a few far-fetched plot devices that didn’t exist in the original version, and I found myself having a hard time being okay with some of the changes that were made.

However, if you’re looking for an enjoyable horror / thriller movie, The Crazies will surely entertain you.

Fame (1980) on Blu-Ray

Warner Brothers Entertainment
Runtime: 133 minutes
Rating: ‘R’
Starring: Irene Cara, Maureen Teefy, Barry Miller, Paul McCrane
Director: Alan Parker
DVD Release Date: January 26, 2010

If you’re sick of seeing modernized dance flicks such as Step Up (2006) and Stomp the Yard (2007) that seemingly plague theaters each year, then the blu-ray edition of Alan Parker’s Fame (1980) is a refreshing change.

For those unfamiliar with the original Fame, it’s a film about students that attend New York City’s High School for the Performing Arts and their struggle to develop their various talents as well as their own personalities. The plot is centered around a handful of main characters, each with their own individual problems and talents. As friendships develop, the characters begin to “discover” themselves and strive to become famous performers. The school offers a place for each student to nurture his or her abilities, but it does not guarantee a future career – that is up to the students to obtain.

Particularly memorable are the characters Ralph and Montgomery, played by Barry Miller and Paul McCrane respectively. Though these characters are not the only ones in the film with very troubled pasts, they are the two that stand out the most. The actors did a fantastic job of displaying realistic emotion, especially Miller’s ability to convey the difficult and hard life that Ralph leads.

Fame’s transition onto Blu-Ray is pretty solid. The film obviously looks much more crisp than it did in its original form, but the cameras used to shoot it weren’t intended for the high definition quality that is present today. However, the film does look good for a movie shot in 1980.

The film comes packaged with a “Soundtrack Sampler” CD which contains three songs and an instrumental version of the song “Fame.” In addition, the blu-ray edition has several special features. A full commentary by director Alan Parker is available for those interested. The “Fame Field Trip” special feature visits the locations used in the shooting of the movie. There is also a “Class Reunion” special feature in which Lee Curreri, Laura Dean, Gene Anthony Ray and Maureen Teefy talk about the making of the film via interviews.

My recommendation: The nice thing about Parker’s Fame is that the film feels very real. All flaws aside, it presents some authentic characters who must adapt themselves to deal with their pasts, present and future. The language and emotions conveyed in Fame are realistic and won’t leave you feeling like you just watched a 1980s film saturated with characters who say things like, “Oh golly!” Flamboyant costumes aside, the original film is entertaining and moving.

If you really liked the original film, the blu-ray edition is probably worth picking up. If you’ve never seen Fame, I’d recommend at least renting it – be sure to get the 1980 original, not the 2009 remake.

Southland Season One Review

by Ryan Taljonick

Warner Brothers Television
Starring: Kevin Alejandro, Michael Cudlitz, Ben McKenzie, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King

Writer Ann Biderman’s Southland is a new police drama television series that is unlike any other – and that’s a good thing. Personally, I’m not a fan of police shows. There are a plethora of different police dramas out there that pump out season after season with the only difference between episodes being the way in which someone was murdered or kidnapped. Occasionally someone even steals a baby. Yet Biderman’s Southland offers something much more compelling: characters with a complex background and complex personalities, and a gritty show that seems more realistic than most cop dramas out there.

Southland has a cast of several “main” characters. The first few episodes of season one focus on rookie Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) as he learns what it means to be a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. His patrols with his training officer, John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz), are far from boring. Both of these characters have less-than-happy pasts which have led to their career choices. Other episodes follow Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King), a woman who is very passionate about her work. Finally, some episodes follow Detective Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) who has an unhappy marriage that interferes with his career, and Detective Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro) who’s hiding some important information from his family.

Many of the episodes in the series are pretty entertaining. Southland is a lot grittier than most cop dramas: the cop actors use language and actions seemingly more realistic than in most television police dramas. Thankfully, Southland doesn’t present anything that’s too hard to believe. Interestingly, NBC canceled the show after airing the first season because of concern that Southland would be unable to produce necessary ratings. TNT has picked up the show and is airing the second season.
The first season of the series is available on an uncensored two-disc set, with each episode being about 40-50 minutes in length. There is some mature language in the uncensored season. The second disc has a special feature called “Southland: Redefining the cop drama” in which the directors, writers and cast discuss the ideas behind the formation of the show.

Southland is unlike any other police drama on television. The show feels more real, the characters feel like real people with real problems, and everything blends together very well. From the camera work to the acting, Southland manages to put together a pretty convincing cop show that you will likely entertain you as long as the action / police drama genre is something you enjoy. Michael Mcgrady, the actor who plays Detective Salinger, describes the show best when he said “it’s not another body-of-the-week type show.”

If you’re big into luxury vehicles, then you have undoubtedly heard of the popular BBC series TopGear. Jeremy Clarkson and his co-hosts, Richard Hammond and James May, present the pros and cons of luxury vehicles as well as some “average” cars. These hour-long episodes include plenty of playful bantering betwixt the hosts and many bluntly stated opinions about the vehicles being tested and reviewed, whether good or bad. This show has a bit of a Mythbusters feel to it and provides some interesting information regarding the latest and greatest luxury vehicles.

TopGear is pretty straightforward and follows a fairly linear pattern from episode to episode. Clarkson and crew generally start off the show by poking fun at one another. Shortly after, they display video of a luxury car being raced around a track. This pattern continues until Clarkson interviews a celebrity (generally a British chap) about vehicles. The crew and their celebrity guest then brainstorm to come up with crazy challenges in which each vehicle will be tested. For example, in one episode they provide five different cars with a gallon of fuel each to test how far each vehicle can go at top speed; in another episode, they try to create a more efficient police car out of old banger cars. The hosts of TopGear never seem to have any trouble coming up with grueling challenges.

Chuck (Season 2)

Warner Brothers Entertainment
Starring: Zachary Levi (Chuck), Yvonne Strahovski (Sarah), Joshua Gomez (Morgan), Adam Baldwin (John Casey)
Everyone’s favorite nerd-turned-spy is available again on DVD with the deluxe six-disc season two box set. The season two set contains 22 episodes filled with action, hot scantily-clad women, and enough nerd culture references to make an eleven year old school girl giggle.

For those of you not familiar with the awesomeness that is Chuck, I highly recommend you take a trip to your local video store and rent the first season. Chuck is an employee at a Buy More (think Best Buy) who has found himself host to many government secrets when his best ex-friend Brice sends him a top secret e-mail. The CIA and NSA both send agents to watch over Chuck: Sarah, a beautiful women who seems to be falling in love with Chuck (and often enjoys wearing revealing clothing), and Casey, an action-loving grunt who strongly dislikes Chuck’s habit of screwing up missions. The second season picks up where the first season left off, and expands on the indecisive romance between Chuck and Sarah, as well as Chuck’s relationship with several of the other main characters. Look forward to long-awaited answers to many questions and many pleasant plot twists, though some of them are predictable. Even so, the end of the second season will please viewers and surely leave them anticipating the third season of Chuck.

As far as the second season box set goes, it comes packed with some really awesome and funny special features in addition to deleted scenes and bloopers. The feature called “Chuck Versus the Webisodes” contains several promotional clips made for the internet that are very, very funny. If you’re a fan of Dr. Awesome, you’ll enjoy “A Real-Life Captain Awesome’s Tips for Being Awesome” in which Dr. Awesome provides the secrets to being… well, awesome. Agent Casey is also on the features list and is willing to share some not-so-common tips for viewers interested in becoming a super deadly spy. There are also actor interviews in which each actor describes his or her character and the role he or she plays throughout the storyline of Chuck (many male viewers will likely be pleased to learn that Yvonne Strahovski, Sarah, has a very cute accent that’s not heard in the show itself). Finally, the season two set comes with a 3D episode on the last disc and two pairs of classic 3D glasses. It’s pretty neat watching a 3D episode on your own television, but because everything is very red/blue, the experience is probably something you will only watch once.

My recommendation: Personally, I have a hard time justifying the expensive cost of a season of pretty much any television series unless it’s something I watch religiously (Example: the way my grandmother watches The Price is Right) and plan on watching multiple times. However, Chuck is a very enjoyable program with likeable characters and witty humor. Chuck offers even more enjoyment to the “geek” subculture, and many viewers will find that several of the characters can easily be related to (minus the spy part). If you’re going to spend money on a television series, season two of Chuck is worth your money.

Lionsgate
Runtime: 100 minutes
Rating: R for some language
Genre: Documentary
Directed by: Pete McCormack
Format: Widescreen
Subtitles: English and Spanish
DVD Audio: 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital

The first thing you should know about Facing Ali before viewing it is that it is a documentary style film. Knowing little about the most famous boxer from the 1960s and 70s, viewers will learn quite a bit about Ali’s boxing career through the recollections of ten of his opponents. Facing Ali is an honest film told by those who fought against Muhammad Ali throughout his career, including fighters like Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Henry Cooper, and more.

Viewers can expect to learn a lot about Ali’s start as a fighter and about his career as a whole, as well as a little bit about his conversion to Islam, the changing of his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali, and his stance on the Vietnam War. This film is very touching, especially towards the end as his modest opponents express empathy towards Ali’s Parkinson’s disease and pay their respects to one of the greatest boxers of all time.

The film also comes with several special features. There are animated trivia cards that display basic facts and interesting details about each of the opponents that speak in the film. There is a feature called “Bringing the Fights to Life” in which the production team discusses the creation of (and ideas behind) Facing Ali, as well as the technology and equipment used in the making of the film. The next section is called “Facing Ali: Book to Screen,” in which the producers discuss how they put together the resources necessary to create an authentic film that accurately tells the story of Ali. Finally, there is a feature called “After the Bell” in which the producers discuss how they were able to meet up with the fighters that tell Ali’s story throughout the film, and their experiences interviewing each boxer.

My recommendation: Any fan of Muhammad Ali will want to own this film. It provides a very authentic and honest revisiting of Ali’s legacy through the stories of ten respectable fighters as they recall their bouts with one of the greatest fighters of all time. Their stories are very real, and viewers will notice right away the amount of respect these boxers have for Muhammad Ali, as well as the empathy they share for his continuing struggle with Parkinson’s disease. However, if you’re not particularly interested in Muhammad Ali and his famous fighting career, this film will probably not interest you. For those even mildly curious about Ali’s greatest fights and the stories that can be told by those he fought against, Facing Ali is at least worth a rental.

Runtime: 153 minutes
Release Date: December 8th, 2009
U.S. Rating: PG for scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality.
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ronald Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Jim Broadbent (Professor Horace Slughorn), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), Alan Rickman (Snape), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy)
Written by: J.K. Rowling (novel), Steve Kloves (screenplay)
Directed by: David Yates

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth installment of the Harry Potter saga, follows the world’s most popular wizard, Harry Potter (Radcliffe), and his friends as the fight against Dark Lord Voldemort continues. Like an individual episode from a television series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is not a film that can be treated as a stand alone piece. As all Harry Potter fans know, Half-Blood Prince is but an individual part of a detailed fantasy world in which wizards and witches live in secret, sending their young to train at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to become… well, witches and wizards.

Like previous Harry Potter films, Half-Blood Prince is based upon its corresponding novel by J.K Rowling, and follows the plot of the novel accurately. Throughout most of the film’s approximate two and a half hour length, the major plot points of Rowling’s novel are presented and adequately explained so that viewers who have not read Rowling’s novels won’t feel as though they’ve missed out on anything important. Expect to see some major plot and character development, as well as a lot of unfolding romances between several of the main characters. This Harry Potter film is all about progressing the story, which by this point has shifted from light-spirited to very dark and bleak. Don’t expect much action to go on in this film; the few action scenes that exist are fairly short. However, though this film may be regarded by many as one of the more dull installments (due to the lack of magic wand fighting and dark-wizard slaying), it is crucially important to the overall Harry Potter saga (and is still entertaining) because it provides the viewers with overdue answers to some very important questions: How can Harry defeat Lord Voldemort, and what is his connection to the powerful dark wizard?

With the final Harry Potter films on the horizon, Half-Blood Prince does a great job of continuing the story that so many people have come to love. The acting in the film is well done. Each character is genuinely portrayed in accordance to Rowling’s novels, often with strong emotions that will leave many viewers feeling empathetic. Looking back at the previous Harry Potter films, it’s obvious how much the overall acting of the cast as a whole has matured. Daniel Radcliffe is no longer a little kid, and this film helps its audience realize that Harry and his friends are growing up. Fights that were once trivial between Harry and Draco Malfoy have now turned deadly; romantic crushes for Harry and his friends are now blossoming into legitimate relationships; threats of the Dark Lord’s return are now all-too-true as he begins regaining control over wizard and muggle worlds alike. All this combined with a lot of love potions and snogging makes for one pretty good package that us muggles can enjoy. Yates does a great job of setting the scene for the upcoming Harry Potter films by creating an ominous and decaying Hogwarts, a dark theme that surely foreshadows what is yet to come.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince also comes with a slew of extra features that are sure to make Harry Potter fans ultra happy. The first item up on the special features list is an exciting sneak preview of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a short piece that all Harry Potter fans will surely be excited to see. Next up on the list is the “close up with the cast of Harry Potter,” a special feature that follows various cast members of Harry Potter as they talk about many of the special effect devices used in the film, the movie editing process, the training of the owls used in the movie, film stunts, and much more. Afterward is a one-minute drill of each of the main cast members in which they have to try and sum up their characters. Shortly after viewers will get a chance to see a Q & A session with the cast to get to know them better. Finally, there is a brief preview of “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” a Harry Potter theme park located in Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

My Recommendation: To truly appreciate this film, you must be familiar with the entirety of the Harry Potter saga. You will have want to have seen the previous Harry Potter movies, or at least have read the books before watching Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Fans of the Harry Potter story will definitely want to add this one to their collection. If you’re one of those who are just mildly entertained by what Harry Potter has to offer, then Half-Blood Prince is worth renting.

If you’re a fan of Halloween and scary movies, this is one horror film you’re probably going to want to add to your collection. Produced by Bryan Singer (director of X-Men and Superman Returns) and written/directed by Michael Dougherty (co-scripter of Superman Returns), this film provides a great mix of holiday thrills and comic relief.

Trick ‘r Treat takes a Tales from the Crypt approach, interweaving four spooky tales that take place on Halloween night. Each mini story becomes a part of the next as the tales unfold, often with pleasantly surprising twists. Trick ‘r Treat embraces the Halloween spirit by providing several urban legends that, by the end of the film, intertwine in a way that creates one very compelling Halloween anthology.

Witness the story of a high school principal (Dylan Baker) who enjoys murdering kids in his spare time by feeding them poisoned candy; the story of a 22 year old virgin woman (Anna Paquin) who may have just found the perfect man during a lonesome walk through the forest (uh-oh!); a group of teenagers who decide to play a prank on a classmate, only to discover the consequences of doing so are pretty unappealing; and finally, an old man (Brian Cox), (a man who parallels Scrooge in relation to his hatred for particular holidays) discovers that a brutal-pumpkin-demon-child is on the prowl for those who think Halloween is a meaningless day.

The film also comes packaged with an animated short film called Trick ‘r Treat: Season’s Greetings (an animation created by Michael Dougherty) which the full-length feature film is based loosely upon. The animation can be viewed with or without commentary by Dougherty. This short animated film (only a few minutes in length) introduces the character “Sam” from Trick ‘r Treat, the aforementioned brutal-pumpkin-demon-child. Dougherty’s commentary explains his origins as a writer, as well as his desire to create a full-length feature film starring his animated character.

My recommendation: If you’re a fan of horror and of the Halloween holiday, this is an anthology you will want to own. Trick ‘r Treat does a great job of melding each of these stories into one tale. The subtle ways in which each story becomes part of another will be appealing to many viewers. The film also does a great job of not overdoing gore and boring horror cliches, and though Trick ‘r Treat does not try to create an overly intense or super scary atmosphere, it does provide enough spooks and thrills to satisfy most horror fans. In addition to the horror-film moments, Michael Dougherty does a great job of adding comic relief throughout the movie. He truly makes his film capture the spirit of Halloween by reminding his viewers that even though Halloween is supposed to be scary and spooky, it is also meant to be fun.

Video

Trick ‘r Treat can be viewed in wide screen or full screen formats.

Before viewing The Goods, I was expecting a decent comedy. The movie has a cast of actors that have done well in past movies: Jeremy Piven (Entourage) Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover), and David Koechner (Anchorman), yet this movie just doesn’t offer many giggle-worthy moments.

Sideburn wielding protagonist Don Ready (Jeremy Piven) and his crew of self-conflicted teammates have “the Goods” when it comes to selling cars. Don’s team of mercenary salesmen consists of Babs (Kathryn Hahn), a vulgar woman who’s sexually interested in a 10 year old boy trapped in the body of a 40 year old man, Brent (David Koechner) a balding middle-aged man who thoroughly enjoys eating breakfast at strip clubs, and Jibby (Ving Rhames) a man who, despite having had sex with hundreds or thousands of women (he’s not exactly sure how many), has never had the chance to make love to one. Hired by a failing car dealership, Don and his team must turn a Fourth of July weekend sale into business-saving venture.

I have always been a firm believer that any decent movie will have a decent plot. Though comedies can be funny without a gripping story, many of the best have some sort of underlying storyline that keeps the movie from getting off track or too random. The Goods does have something that resembles a plot but it is very weak, and a lot of events that take place seem so random and out of place that they only harm the progression of the story (or the lack thereof). Expect a cameo appearance from Will Ferell that may lift your spirits and hopes only temporarily.

The movie started off well enough: a few funny jokes here and there, some minor character and plot development, and even a strip club that serves breakfast! However, viewers will soon find that Neal Brennan’s The Goods relies far too heavily on vulgar humor and bad jokes that soon become repetitive and unappealing. The Goods buries itself in hole with exhausted clichés, one-liners, and boy-band reminiscing. Ultimately, as a fan of comedy, I felt a bit let down and disappointed. The Goods contains no supplemental material (such as bonus features or deleted scenes), something that is often expected to accompany almost every movie that makes its way to DVD.

My recommendation: Pass this one up (unless you can watch it for free and your only other option to kill some time is to cartwheel several hundred miles to watch a Nickelback concert). If you are a diehard fan of overused humor and lackluster performances, there may be a place in your collection for The Goods.

The Goods is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 televisions.

Audio

The Goods is presented with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround and Spanish 5.1 Surround, as well as English, French, and Spanish subtitles for the hearing impaired.
